Judging the Marfield Prize…

It was an honor to help judge this year’s Marfield Prize, a $10,000 national award for arts writing given by the Arts Club of Washington, won by Philip Gefter for his book, Wagstaff: Before and After MapplethorpeWhat a fabulous exploration of Samuel Wagstaff’s fascinating life, his relationships (including, especially, with Robert Mapplethorpe, but also Andy Warhol and Patti Smith), the commerce of fine art photography, and the awful early years of the AIDS plague. Remica L. Bingham-Risher and Candace Katz were the other judges, and terrific folks with whom to work.
